The University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Central Florida are apparently taking National Science Foundation money to try and build virtual reality citizens that will act, talk and react like real people "in a way that is so real you would swear the images were alive."
The idea is to create avatars of people who "respond with a high degree of recognition to different voices and the various ways questions are phrased."
I think this is actually a few steps up on the uses of avatars from the way the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention intends for them through such things as Second Life. If it can be made to work (a big if, given the past failures of artificial intelligence projects) it could be of real use to physicians and their patients.
If you really can capture the essence of a real-life doctor or nurse then it's more likely, for example, that elderly patients will react to them than some fabricated personality. After all, a personal relationship and the trust involved in that is a big reason that treatment plans succeed at all, particularly with homebound people.
Of course, then there will be the inevitable physician question: Who gets paid for this virtual consultation, me or my avatar?
