When talking with people about Web 2.0 for a story upcoming in GHIT, a lot of the conversations spent at least some time on the issue of podcasts, iPods and MP3 players. These are not Web 2.0 technologies as such, though they get lumped in with others because they are a part of the distribution medium for a lot of Web 2.0 content.
Most of the examples of the use of podcasts are like those of the Cleveland Clinic's Health Edge, which are classically educational. In that sense, iPods more an extension of the "old" paper-based notebook, albeit in a much more direct, flexible and hipper form.
However, the new Web 2.0 infrastructure is nothing if not innovative. Temple University's School of Medicine has come up with a truly new way to use the iPod, which is hopefully indicative of how Web 2.0-ish technologies may evolve in the future.
They've applied it to a very basic and very old medical instrument -- the stethoscope -- to dramatically improve the listening skills of doctors that need to use it every day.
Doctors listen repetitively to the sound of a heartbeat on an iPod. Studies showed that this kind of intensive immersion in the sounds of the heart improved doctors' correct interpretation of the sound from an average of 40 percent success up to 80 percent.
For all of the modern wonders of technology, being able to use a stethoscope for diagnoses is still one of the most critical skills.
Now let's see what kind of things people come up with in the future that play off this and similar kinds of innovations. It's not much of a stretch to consider online Web tutorials that can match a number of different text, audio and visual presentations to teach these types of skills, for example.
